Upon recently having my second child, I was able to give the new Motif Luna to review. While this wasn’t my first rodeo with a double electric breast pump, it had been a while since the last time I pumped. With my first child, I used a Medela Pump in Style and loved its simplicity. I also got the Spectra S2PLUS through my insurance when I was pregnant with Lydia. That being said, I had a pretty fresh take on this new pump, but I wasn’t completely inexperienced either. Testing The New Motif Luna Breast Pump I’ve been giving this pump a lot of action since little baby was born. From experiencing late nights, returning to work, and even flying for a work trip the Luna was with me for it all and it’s still going. This is an incredibly durable pump that’s easy to travel with. But I’ll start from the beginning. Parts Included With The Motif Luna: To my surprises upon opening the box to assemble my pump and become familiar with it prior to baby arriving, as the experts suggest, it was already put together. The Motif Luna has an intuitive design that’s easy to quickly understand and came with easy to follow instructions. Trust me, with a toddler, infant, husband, and cat, the simpler something is, the better. I customized the best modes for expressing milk in a matter of seconds, and the Luna remembered them! All I have to do is turn it on and select Memory Mode to turn on my favorite settings. Hygienic I love that the Motif Luna is a closed system pump with protectors that prevent milk from backflowing into the tube and getting into the motor. If milk or moisture gets into the motor, there’s no way to know if mold and bacteria are growing and infecting your breast milk. I loved using a closed system because it provided a little extra piece of mind that the tubes and motor were staying clean. You still washed my bottles and flanges after every use, and I liked to sterilize the whole kit and kaboodle once a week. Portable Like a majority of women out there, I’m a working mom, so I'll need to pump and work to maintain my breastfeeding goals. The Motif Luna is sleek and lightweight, it was easy to quickly drop into any bag. It must weigh about a pound and didn’t weigh me down one bit. It conveniently fit in my carry-on bag for Mexico, so I was able to maintain my milk supply for a whole week when I was away from my baby. Getting my pump through the airport was easy, the TSA agents just wanted to take a look at it. Durable The Motif Luna is also very durable. It’s still going strong and operating at peak performance after numerous pumping sessions and a few tumbles on the floor of my car while going back and forth from work. Let’s also not forget that it traveled with me to Mexico! All of the pumping accessories, such as the tubing and bottles, for example, have a sturdy feel. Every item included has a sense of long-lasting quality. Discreet The Motif Luna is the quietest breast pump I’ve ever used. It seemed to operate at a whisper. I can pump at my desk without anybody noticing. I wanted to build a freezer stash of breast milk. I’d nurse her on one side and pump the other. I could use it right beside the crib after she fell asleep at night. The backlit LCD screen and night light are both soothing and easy to read. They aren’t harsh and blinding, which helped for expressing milk while Lydia was sleeping during the night. By having a faster let-down mode, the Motif Luna was actually able to completely empty my breast. It only took about 15 minutes to fully empty my breasts!! This was great for quickly pumping breaks at work and made it seem like I wasn’t taking time out of my vacation to pump. Comfortable Because the Motif Luna is strong with the ability to express breast milk in 20 minutes, you may think it hurts or is uncomfortable to use, but that’s not true. It seems to easily mimic my baby’s breastfeeding pattern for soothing comfort, even at the highest setting. Plus, you can easily change the vacuum settings at any time to suit your needs. The flanges or breast shields have a different shape, with more of an angle that seemed to fit my breasts better. Instead of having a standard cone shape, these flanges are much closer to my natural shape. Looks Great I’m not sure if you’ve noticed that some breast pumps look like they haven’t been updated since 1965? Or they only come in pink or blue, regardless of your baby’s gender? Well, thank goodness the Motif Luna has a modern design with a gender-neutral shade of teal. It provides a nice pop of color and fits in well with any furniture. It won’t stick out around the house like an eyesore. A Few Negatives... Unfortunately, no breast pump is perfect. Even though my time with the Motif Luna has been primarily positive so far, I did come across a few potential setbacks. The Luna has a glossy finish that’s prone to fingerprints. I personally prefer matte products so I don’t have to keep wiping them down. The bottles that are included are a little small. Each mom may express different amounts of milk, but I think a bigger bottle option for resupply would be helpful. There is no battery or car charger option available, so if you aren’t near a plug you’re out of luck. I would have preferred a little more flexibility. It only came with one flange size, unlike other options. It’s not like one flange size fits all, all breasts come in different shape and sizes. There are no locks for the backflow protector. This isn’t a deal breaker as long as you aren’t moving around a lot while you pump, but it made me feel My Overall Experience The Motif Luna is a great breast pump. It’s quiet, strong, and has a closed system. I can’t believe how comfortable it is, especially when it has the ability to completely empty my breasts in as little as 20 minutes. Using the Motif Luna in Mexico! Even though I wish it was battery powered, it’s incredibly lightweight and easy to travel with. I’ve been pumping at work without any issues. This reliable breast pump and its accessories haven’t let me down. Plus, the Motif Luna was designed with moms in mind, with discreet features built to suit their individual needs at an incredibly low cost. Motif actually designed the Luna to make it easier for moms to receive a high-quality pump through insurance. I remember reading last year some insurance companies lowered the reimbursement rate for breast pumps. It’s lower cost should help moms receive their breast pump for free under their insurance coverage.
